Bruges by train from Brussels: how the day actually went
We did Bruges as a DIY train day trip from Brussels, and people always ask how it actually went — the logistics, not the brochure version. So here’s the real account, mistakes included.
The journey
We bought tickets on the SNCB app that morning — no need to book ahead, the fare’s fixed whether you buy weeks early or five minutes before (the train). Walked to Brussels-Central (the trains stop at all three central stations), hopped a direct IC to Ostend, and got off at Bruges about an hour later. Easy, cheap, no stress. About €17 each way.
From Bruges station it’s a 15-minute walk to the Markt, well signposted. We did walk it; in hindsight the bus would’ve saved tired feet later, but the walk was fine.
What we got right
We went reasonably early — arriving around 9:30. Not dawn, but early enough that the morning was manageable. The canal-boat queue was short, the Belfry climb was quiet, and the light on the canals was beautiful (day plan).
What we got wrong
Two things. First, we had lunch on the Markt out of laziness — same moules-frites we’d have had a block back, 30% more. Lesson learned.
Second, we lingered too long over coffee mid-morning and lost our head start; by the time we wanted the canal boat again in the afternoon, the queue was 40 minutes. The crowds really do arrive around 11, and once they do, Bruges changes character completely.
Train vs tour, having done it
Honestly? The train was the right call. Bruges is compact and easy to navigate — you don’t need a guide to find the Belfry or the canals, and the train is far cheaper and more flexible than an organised tour (tour vs DIY). The only people I’d point toward a tour are those combining Bruges with Ghent in one day, where the timing gets genuinely tight.
Would I do it again?
In a heartbeat — same train, but I’d go even earlier, eat one street back, and do the canal boat first before the queues. The DIY Bruges day trip is one of the easiest, most rewarding things you can do from Brussels. Just respect the one rule: the early bird gets the empty, magical city.
