Charleroi airport to Brussels: the cheapest route we found
Our €20 flight to “Brussels” landed at Charleroi — which, as plenty of budget travellers discover too late, is about 50 km from the city (the airport confusion). The cheap fare suddenly had a transfer attached. Here’s how we minimised it.
The mistake we nearly made
The obvious option is the Flibco shuttle bus straight to Brussels-Midi — easy, direct, about an hour. It’s the right choice for most people, and we’d recommend it if you value simplicity. But it’s not the cheapest, especially if you buy on the day. Turning up and paying at the airport is the classic way to overpay.
The cheaper route: bus + train
For us, watching every euro on a budget trip, the cheaper combo was:
- TEC bus from the airport to Charleroi-Sud railway station (the local bus, not the express shuttle).
- SNCB train from Charleroi-Sud to Brussels (Midi/Central/Nord), about 50–60 minutes.
With a discounted rail ticket (a weekend or youth fare if you qualify), this came out noticeably cheaper than the direct shuttle. It involves one change and a bit more faff, but for budget travellers with time, it’s the saver (airport guide).
When to just pay for the shuttle
Honestly, if any of these apply, take the direct shuttle instead:
- You’re arriving late or tired.
- You have heavy luggage and don’t want a change.
- You’re in a group that can split a different transfer.
- You just want zero hassle.
The time and stress saved is worth the few extra euros for many people.
The real lesson
The biggest money tip isn’t the route — it’s the maths before you book the flight. A €20 Charleroi fare plus a transfer each way, plus the lost hour, can erase the saving versus a slightly pricier flight into the actual Brussels Airport (Zaventem), which is a 20-minute train from the centre (Zaventem guide).
So: factor Charleroi’s distance into your “cheap flight,” book the shuttle online in advance if you take it (it’s pricier on the day), or do the bus-plus-train if you’re squeezing every euro. And whatever you do — don’t confuse Charleroi (CRL) with Zaventem (BRU). More budget tactics in our Brussels on a budget guide.
