Waterloo: From Brussels Napoleon S Last Battle of Waterloo Tour

Is Waterloo worth visiting from Brussels?

Yes if you're interested in history — the 1815 battlefield where Napoleon was finally defeated lies just south of Brussels. The excellent underground Memorial 1815 museum, the panorama, and the climb up the Lion's Mound make a strong half-day. Public transport is fiddly, so a tour or car is easier.

Where Napoleon’s story ended

On 18 June 1815, the rolling farmland just south of Brussels became the stage for one of history’s most consequential battles. Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo ended a quarter-century of European war and reshaped the continent. Today it’s one of the most accessible and well-presented battlefields anywhere — a strong choice for history lovers, and a complete change of register from Brussels’ chocolate and Art Nouveau. For the town and area overview, see our Waterloo destination guide; here’s the day-trip plan.

Getting there (the honest logistics)

This is the one mainstream day trip from Brussels where public transport is genuinely awkward. The key sites cluster at the Hameau du Lion, several km south of Waterloo town, near Braine-l’Alleud:

  • By car: 25–35 minutes from central Brussels. The simplest option, with parking on site.
  • By public transport: train to Braine-l’Alleud, then bus W to the battlefield, around an hour all in — doable but fiddly with timing.
  • By tour: a guided Waterloo tour removes all the hassle and, crucially, supplies the narrative that makes the gentle green fields meaningful. For battlefields, context is most of the value — see tour vs train.

What to see

Memorial 1815 — a superb modern, largely underground museum at the foot of the Lion’s Mound. Immersive exhibits, uniforms, weapons, and a 4D experience put you inside the battle. Allow 1.5–2 hours. This is the heart of the visit.

The Lion’s Mound (Butte du Lion) — a 43-metre artificial hill topped by a cast-iron lion, marking where the Prince of Orange was wounded. Climb the 226 steps for a 360° view over the entire battlefield — the best way to grasp the troop positions. A tour focused on the Lion’s Mound and panorama ties the view to the events.

The Panorama — a vast 110-metre circular painting (1912) of the cavalry charge, housed in its own rotunda beside the mound.

Hougoumont Farm — the fortified farmhouse whose defence was pivotal; beautifully restored with its own small museum.

Wellington Museum (in Waterloo town) — the inn that was the Duke’s headquarters, where he wrote his victory dispatch. Worth it if you have time or are passing through the town.

A sensible day

A half-day covers it well: arrive late morning, do Memorial 1815, climb the mound, see the Panorama and Hougoumont, and you’re back in Brussels for the afternoon. Pair the deeper history-reading with our Waterloo battlefield guide.

Worth it?

For anyone with an interest in history, yes — it’s one of Europe’s most significant and best-interpreted battlefields, right on Brussels’ doorstep. If military history leaves you cold, the green fields alone won’t convert you; choose Ghent or Leuven instead. See the full day-trip ranking to place it.
