The best month to visit Brussels (after several tries)
We’ve now done Brussels in spring, summer, autumn and the depths of winter. People always ask which month is best, so here’s our honest league table.
Our winner: September
If I had to pick one month, it’s September. The summer warmth lingers, the days are still long, the terraces are open — but the July–August crowds have thinned, especially on the Bruges and Ghent day trips. Golden light, fewer people, decent weather. It’s the sweet spot (best time to visit).
Close second: late April–May
Spring is lovely, and it has a trump card — the brief Hallerbos bluebells in April (our diary) and the Royal Greenhouses’ short opening. Mild, fresh, blooming. The only catch is the showers, but Brussels weather is changeable in any month, so you pack for that regardless.
The dark horse: December
I know, I know. But December genuinely punches above its weight thanks to the Christmas market and the Grand-Place light show (December weekend). It’s cold and grey, but the city is built for it, and it’s magical after dark. A real contender if you like festive over sunny (Brussels in winter).
Best value: January–February
Want it cheap and quiet? January and February. The crowds vanish, the hotels drop, and Brussels’ indoor strengths — chocolate, beer, museums — don’t care about the weather. You sacrifice daylight and warmth, but you save money and get the city to yourself.
Most overrated: July–August
Summer is the liveliest season (Brussels in summer), and on even years there’s the Flower Carpet. But it’s also peak crowds and peak prices, and the day trips to Bruges get genuinely heaving. Lovely, but not the bargain or the breathing room of the shoulder months.
The honest truth
Brussels is a year-round city — its best pleasures are indoors, so weather matters less here than almost anywhere. If you want my one-line answer: aim for September or May for the ideal balance, December for the magic, or January for the bargain. Whenever you come, pack a rain layer and don’t worry too much.
