Brussels travel in 2026: what's new
Planning a Brussels trip in 2026? A few things have changed since the last guidebooks. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new and worth knowing before you go.
ETIAS: the big one for non-EU visitors
The headline change for many travellers is ETIAS — the EU’s travel authorisation for visa-exempt non-EU visitors (UK, US, Canada, Australia and more). It’s not a visa, but it’s a quick online application and fee you’ll need before you travel to Belgium and the wider Schengen area. Don’t get caught out at the airport — apply ahead. We’ve explained it in detail in ETIAS for Belgium, explained.
Belgian Beer World is now established
The grand Belgian Beer World in the restored Bourse (former stock exchange) has bedded in as a flagship attraction — an interactive journey through the country’s beer culture, topped by a rooftop bar with city views (our review, full guide). A great rainy-day or first-day stop, especially for beer newcomers.
Transport updates
There are ongoing metro and tram improvements across the STIB network, including accessibility upgrades and line works (metro news). Check current routes if a particular station matters to your plans (getting around). The airport train remains the easy way in from Zaventem (airport guide).
What hasn’t changed (thankfully)
The good news: the things that make Brussels great are exactly as they were. The Grand-Place still dazzles, the chocolate and beer are still world-class, the comic murals are still free, and Bruges and Ghent are still an hour away by train (best day trips). Domestic trains still need no advance booking (day trips by train).
Quick 2026 checklist
- Sort ETIAS before you travel if you’re a non-EU visitor (guide).
- Check current transport works if a specific metro line matters.
- Book popular things ahead — the Horta Museum, tours, top restaurants.
- Pack for changeable weather — that, at least, never changes.
None of this should complicate your trip — it’s mostly admin done in advance. Get ETIAS sorted, check transport, and Brussels in 2026 is as rewarding as ever. Start planning with our how many days and best time to visit guides.
