Two days of family fun in Brussels

Brussels is a brilliant city for kids — a giant climbable atom, miniature Europe, cartoon murals to hunt, chocolate to make, dinosaurs and parks. This two-day plan mixes big-ticket attractions with free fun and plenty of waffles, paced so children stay happy and parents stay sane. For the full toolkit, see Brussels with kids.

Day 1 — Heysel: the Atomium & Mini-Europe

The best family day in the city, out at Heysel (with-kids guide):

Morning: Mini-Europe — 350+ miniature landmarks with working trains, an erupting Vesuvius and buttons to press (guide). Outdoor, so do it first on a dry day.

Lunch: on-site or a picnic.

Afternoon: the Atomium — escalators, the fast lift, the top-sphere view (guide). A combined ticket with transport bundles both with the trip out (metro line 6, ~20 min).

Evening: back to the centre for an early dinner and a waffle (best waffles).

Day 2 — centre: murals, chocolate & dinosaurs

Morning — comic mural hunt. Turn the city into a game spotting Tintin, the Smurfs and Lucky Luke on giant walls, ending at Manneken-Pis (find Jeanneke and Zinneke too) (murals map, Manneken-Pis). A comic murals tour adds the stories.

Late morning — chocolate workshop. Hands-on fun making truffles or pralines to take home — a truffle-making session is forgiving for little hands (workshops).

Lunch: frites in a cone with a choice of sauce (best frites).

Afternoon — pick one:

  • Dinosaurs: the Museum of Natural Sciences’ iguanodon hall (a sure hit).
  • Trains: Train World (climb into the cabs — guide).
  • Park time: the Bois de la Cambre (boats) or Cinquantenaire (playgrounds — best parks).

Evening: relaxed family dinner; everyone’s earned it.

Family pacing tips

  • One big thing per day plus free fun — don’t over-schedule.
  • Build in downtime — park breaks, chocolate stops.
  • Mind cobbles with strollers; the metro is only partly step-free (accessibility).
  • Weatherproof swaps: Mini-Europe is outdoor — if it rains, do Train World or the dinosaurs instead (rainy day).
  • Stay central near a metro line for short trips home (where to stay).

Add a day?

A third day suits a kid-friendly day tripBruges (canal boats!) works well (Bruges day trip). For more ideas, see family things to do.

Two days, two very different sorts of fun — big attractions out at Heysel, free games and treats in the centre — and a city that genuinely delights children.
