Brussels rainy-day survival: how we saved a washout
It rained. Not a passing shower — a solid, grey, all-day Belgian downpour. We’d planned a day trip to Bruges and binned it over breakfast. And it turned into the best day of the trip.
Here’s the thing about Brussels: its signature pleasures are nearly all indoors. Chocolate, beer, world-class museums, a covered 19th-century arcade. The city is, almost suspiciously, built for rain.
What we actually did
Morning — chocolate. We started with a chocolate workshop, which is exactly where you want to be when it’s hammering down outside: a warm room, a chocolatier, and far too many samples (workshops). We left with a box of pralines and zero regret.
Late morning — the arcade. We sheltered in the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, Europe’s oldest covered shopping arcade — glass-roofed, elegant, dry, and lined with chocolate shops. You can stroll its full length without a drop landing on you.
Afternoon — museums. Up to the Mont des Arts, where the Magritte, the Royal Fine Arts and the MIM sit within steps of each other, so you barely go outside between them (best museums). We did the Magritte and lingered far longer than we would have on a sunny day.
Evening — the brown café. And then the perfect rainy finish: a snug, wood-panelled beer café, the windows steamed up, a strong Trappist in hand, the rain rattling the glass outside (best beer bars). Honestly, bliss.
What I’d tell my past self
- Don’t mourn the washout — reshuffle to the indoor stuff and lean in.
- The Mont des Arts museums are minutes apart — perfect for staying dry.
- Chocolate and beer are weatherproof joys — a rainy day is the excuse.
- Pack a compact brolly — showers come and go, so you’ll still nip between places.
If you want it pre-planned, we wrote it up as a rainy-day itinerary. But the short version is: in Brussels, a wet day isn’t a write-off. It might just be your favourite. The same indoor strengths make winter a great time to visit too.
